I read today that 20% of Americans think that the sun revolves around the Earth. (A National Science Foundation study cited in Susan Jacoby's Outlook article in the Post today said so...)

My only hope is that people were asked, "Does the sun revolve around the Earth?" and that they immediately responded 'yes' without actually thinking about it. You know, they just heard the words 'sun', 'Earth', and 'revolve.' And that if they were asked, "Does the sun revolve around the Earth, or does the Earth revolve around the sun?" then more people would get it right. I know, maybe it's a stretch, but I can't believe so many people are that stupid. At least I hope not. Scary.
